March 16: Shouting With Glee

Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’
Keep those dice rollin’
Hello Kitty!

If you imagine the above words to the tune of “Rawhide” you can picture us singing that while playing Hello Kitty Bingo. That is something the girls and I did long ago when it was still a new and big thing to have Sarah play a game with more than one person. To encourage her to roll in a timely manner, I came up with the song, and the girls would belt out “Hello Kitty” at the top of their lungs. Last Sunday Sarah had such a long nap in the afternoon after we spent time at the playground that she was not at all tired at bedtime. Amy and I had planned on playing a game after Sarah went to bed, so we adapted our plans to include Sarah. We had a full reprisal of our early Hello Kitty Bingo days, all of us belting out the song many times throughout the game. It was so much fun. Amy said afterwards that it was nice to do such things and remember that she has a sister. So often they only really see each other at dinner since Sarah is usually on her bus when Amy comes downstairs for breakfast. Sarah gets home before Amy, and then when Amy does get home at 5pm we either have somewhere to go or Amy goes to her room to do her homework. Then Sarah goes to bed by 8:30 and Amy stays up longer, usually doing homework.

We have started early birthday celebrations for Amy and me since our shared birthday is approaching. Carl and I went out to dinner on Wednesday night and went for a walk along the river afterwards. The weather has been the perfect not-too-hot, not-too-cold spring weather that is extra perfect for walking. I have gone on many walks and gotten coffee with friends too, and that has been wonderful. Last night Amy and Sarah had Amy’s Great Birthday Bash Sleepover with Anna at our house, so Carl and I went to the mountain house and binge watched the last three episodes of Masters of The Air, a mini series about the 100th bomb group during WWII.

On Friday Sarah was excited to help stuff envelopes for a mailing. This was instead of her usual school job, which she also loves. She really likes feeling helpful and yesterday initiated filling our humidifiers. She also signed her voter registration application form and we mailed it! I completed the rest of the form with her permission since it is hard for her to write a lot of information in a small space. She can write clearly enough for a thank you note or school work, but she gets stressed about any restrictions on how she writes even if it is just her name (how small, how neat, on what line).

Yesterday I took Sarah to get a prom dress at an event called Bless The Dress. It was a modern church building with a huge room filled with racks of gently-used prom dresses, shoes, jewelry, and anything else someone might need. Everyone was welcome to choose one dress for free. Since Sarah isn’t a huge one for wearing dresses, and going to a regular store comes with great temptations to get everything else that is also displayed, this seemed like a good thing to try. I had no idea what size Sarah would be, but we figured it out and found a beautiful blue, purple, and leopard print dress. I didn’t think to take a picture as she was trying it on, so you will all have to wait until she actually has her prom. The chances of her putting it on again before that are basically non-existent.

On Wednesday I took my car in for a recall and software update. When I scheduled they told me I could have a loaner car and that it would take a day. When I dropped the car off they said they didn’t have a loaner and it would take two days. Then when I called to check on it towards the end of the second day, I was told it would take a third day but would be ready by the end of the day Friday. Friday I tried reaching the service desk repeatedly to double check if it would actually be done. I couldn’t get through. I decided to trust the “it will be done by 5” so Sarah and I got an Uber and headed towards the car dealer. As the traffic increased and our ETA got very close to closing time, I tried calling again. This time I tried calling sales instead of service so at least I got a person, and I explained the situation. A few minutes later I got a text from the service department that my car was still not ready. I had the Uber take us back home. This whole trip might have been frustrating with the traffic and going through a tunnel twice, both times with traffic and once with a red X blocking one lane, but I had Sarah with me so it was hilarious and fun. She had such a good time. She loves traffic and slow down and tunnels. If you get a red X at a tunnel she shouts, “Hallelujah, this is my lucky day!” And she means it. This is always a good reminder that it is not our circumstances that dictate our emotions, it is what we think about those circumstances. I am guessing she is the only person in Pittsburgh to love tunnels and backups as much as she does, but she is slowly indoctrinating those of us who know her so that we also can delight in the same scenarios, if only because we can think of her and her glee.

May you have something that you want to shout with great glee.
